FIREWORKS IN KNOXVILLE: PANNELL & SHIPP IGNITE THE CROWD AT XFA 02

Knoxville, TN – History was made at the Knoxville World’s Fair Park as XFA 02 became the first-ever Pro/Am event under the Xtreme Fighting Alliance banner. Among the night’s standout contests was a thrilling amateur kickboxing bout between two promising young athletes: Steven Pannell (Shield Systems, 1-0) and Jonathan Shipp (Victory Martial Arts, 0-0-1).

Round 1: Tactical Start with Fireworks

Both fighters wasted no time setting a blistering pace. Pannell pushed forward with intensity, throwing volume and forcing exchanges, while Shipp relied on his length, karate background, and sharp kicking arsenal to maintain range. Using his height and reach, Shipp was able to dictate much of the opening frame with well-timed kicks and control of distance. Judges likely leaned the first round in his favor.

Round 2: Pannell Flips the Momentum

The second round marked a turning point. Pannell came out even more aggressive, closing the distance and drawing Shipp into close-range exchanges. His relentless pressure and combinations began to land with authority, forcing Shipp to fight Pannell’s fight. Round 3: Gas Pedal to the Finish

The final round mirrored the second, with Pannell never taking his foot off the gas. Shipp showed flashes of creativity, throwing spinning kicks and striking from unorthodox angles, but fatigue began to show. Pannell, at just 16 years old, displayed poise and maturity beyond his years, overwhelming his opponent with constant forward pressure and effective striking until the final bell.

The bout went the distance and highlighted the bright future of both competitors. Pannell, improving to 2-0, demonstrated aggression, composure, and the ability to adapt mid-fight. Shipp, at only 18 years old, showed toughness, technical skill, and the heart to hang in against a relentless opponent.
